A Collision of Coffee and Curiosity (The Original Spark)

Our journey began with two coffee machines: the Decent Espresso and Flair 58. Decent Espresso, a smart machine celebrated for its precision engineering and cutting-edge technology, offers users countless customizable extraction profiles. Meanwhile, the Flair 58 established itself as the gold standard among manual lever machines through its pro-grade design and hands-on brewing experience.
By chance, we attempted to recreate Decent's iconic blooming extraction profile using the Flair 58. To our surprise, that experimental shot delivered an extraordinary cup of coffee. That momentary burst of fragrance and sweetness left an indelible mark on our palates - yet no matter how hard we tried, we couldn't recreate it again. Traditional manual machines lack data recording capabilities, relying solely on human intuition and experience. These limitations created invisible barriers, locking coffee-making possibilities within the expertise of a few.

How can we demystify manual coffee machines' black box operations? How can technology truly empower coffee creativity? How can we enable everyone to brew exceptional coffee consistently? With these questions in mind, we initiated the process of developing Espresso Monitor (EM).

Finding the Sweet Spot Between Tech and Tradition (The Balancing Act)

Turning inspiration into reality proved far more complex than anticipated. Early explorations by SEP and Pressensor with their groundbreaking devices revealed a critical insight – data might hold the key to breaking traditional coffee-making boundaries. However, our exploration does not stop there. Prioritizing convenience and environmental responsibility, we settled on a low-power Bluetooth solution paired with rechargeable lithium batteries to meet diverse user needs across different brewing environments. The journey from concept to mass production exceeded our expectations in complexity. Three seemingly simple technologies – low-power Bluetooth modules, rechargeable batteries, and high-precision pressure sensors – required exhaustive testing cycles during component selection. It was necessary to identify an equilibrium between battery life, measurement accuracy, and manufacturing costs. In order to verify the stability of these three combinations, we undertook a significant number of trips between the studio and the factory.
The most thrilling yet challenging phase emerged when our small team manually assembled the first production batch at the factory. Every user feedback loop drove relentless iterations – recalibrating sensor thresholds, refining battery management algorithms, and rethinking assembly processes.

Harmonizing Data and Craftsmanship (The Freedom in Precision)

EM bridges the silent conversation between machine and artisan through real-time pressure curve visualization. For the first time, users can directly observe whether the pre-infusion phase delivers a smooth pressure rise, if mid-extraction fluctuations hint at uneven tamping, or even diagnose over-extraction through a "tail-end curve collapse."
But technology’s value extends beyond mere data capture. We envision EM as a connector within the coffee ecosystem:
  • Open Bluetooth Protocol: Breaking down device silos, enabling third-party developers to tap into the data stream.
  • Tool-First Design: Not to replace manual skill, but to offer a scientific lens through a more comprehensive perspective of "pressure-time-flow," empowering users to analyze and refine their technique.
  • Sustainability Commitment: Combining rechargeable batteries with low-power chips to align technological progress with environmental responsibility.
For beginners, EM serves as a compass to navigate the learning curve; for seasoned baristas, it becomes a microscope to explore flavor frontiers. When coffee makers are freed from the "mysticism" of trial-and-error, they can focus on the bean’s unique character, subtle water temperature shifts, or even the tactile feedback of extraction—the essence of BOOKOO’s philosophy: "Tooling technology, humanizing tools." Whether it's recreating the "memory" of a cup of coffee through data replication or optimizing product stability with curves, EM is always a partner in the user's exploration journey, not a replacement.

From Sensor to Ecosystem (The Future)

Over two years, EM evolved far beyond a mere sensor – it became the foundation of an expanding ecosystem. We developed custom-fit adapters for iconic machines like the Flair Pro2 and Cafelat Robot, introduced integrated solutions combining three-way valves with mechanical pressure gauges, and launched the Themis Mini while continuously refining the BOOKOO APP to strengthen system cohesion. Yet this is merely the prologue.

As we celebrate our second anniversary, reflecting on those late-night studio experiments still quickens our pulse. Because innovation isn’t just cold data – it’s humanity’s enduring quest for beauty, encoded in technology.
This is the story of BOOKOO EM. And your chapter? It might begin right here, tracing your first pressure curve on this screen.
